Sunday 21st November saw the launch of the NonStop Trials Academy at 88 Valley, Wakefield, Nelson. A large crowd was presented with a spectacular exhibition of Trials riding from a team of local and National riders including six times NZ Champion Warren Laugesen. Speaking of spectacular, Andrew Oliver, rarely seen on his Trials motorbike, produced the day's second most spectacular ride. To make it doubly impressive he attacked the same obstacles on his Trials pushbike, much to the crowds amazement.

Motocross Josh Coppins, home after a huge year on the International circuit, was also there as a special guest. Coppins is working on balance rather than speed and the World No.2 has been trying out the Country's first dedicated Motorcycle Trials course near Nelson.

It's been an uphill battle keeping youngsters interested in Trials. Some of them like Motueka's Josh Coppins give it up to pursue Motocross but the World No.2 is still a fan.

Josh says-
"A lot of young riders these days start Motocross and find the speed before they find the skill. I think to do Trials really helps your technique, helps your balance and that's why I do it also. It's good for you. It improves your basic skills."

But former NZ Trials Champion Stephen Oliver wants youngsters to stay in his sport so he's designed the country's first purpose built Trials course just South of Nelson to try and stop the big drop off.

Stephen says-
"The aim of this in particular is to produce more talented young riders so they can compete Overseas quite competitively. At the moment we get them to a certain level and then they just stop."

To help get over that obstacle Oliver's also set up the NonStop Trials Academy enlisting the help of six times NZ Champion Warren Laugesen from Levin.

Warren says-
"The greatest skill is balance. Once you've got your balance right, obviously the object of the sport is not to put your feet down."

Stephen's coaching is already proving successful, producing NZ Junior Champions for the last three years in a row and with a hot prospect for 2006 things look set to continue positively for the Academy and the Sport of Trials.
